When I went through South Dakota
I met an Indian brave.
Well I might have been lost in the Badlands
but I'll never be able to say.
I reckon that he found me left for dead
when the shadows crossed my eyes
in the Canyons of the Badlands where it's said,
"the eagles own the sky."

Well I woke up in a tepee
in a place I didn't know.
An indian maiden watchin me
as I opened my eyes slow.
The maiden's name was Tutempra.
Was her brother that saved my life.
And the elders called him "Cago."
Means the bear who learned to fly.

Well they cared for me till I was strong
And welcomed me with them.
And they fed me meat from the buffalo
Till I could travel again.
Then the winter storms fell upon the land
And closed the canyon doors.
West Virginia called even louder now.
She beckons me once more.

Well I packed my horse and saddle
It was time to say good-bye
Cago took a feather from his sheath
then he put his hand on mine.
He said, "tuta tandra mura kute mandey"
"let eagles be your guide."
Then Tutempra lowered her eyes and head
I felt my spirit rise.
